Both look beautiful. Both add value. The right choice comes down to your home's foundation and where you want the floors to go.
Solid hardwood is one continuous piece of wood, usually 3/4 inch thick. It can be sanded and refinished multiple times over its lifetime, which is why many homes still have their original 1950s oak floors looking great today. Solid hardwood works best over wood subfloors in above-grade rooms like living areas, bedrooms, and hallways.
Engineered hardwood has a real wood veneer on top of cross-layered plywood. That construction makes it more stable in changing humidity and a smarter pick for concrete slabs, which many mid-century Eichler homes and newer Bay Area builds have. Engineered floors can also go into basements, kitchens, and near bathrooms where solid wood struggles.
Not sure which one you need? Book a free in-home measurement and our team will check your subfloor and recommend the right option.
Every wood species has a different look, hardness, and price point. Here's a quick guide to the ones we carry most often.
Oak (red and white). The classic choice and still the most popular hardwood in Los Altos homes. Durable, takes stain beautifully, and works with almost every design style. White oak has a cooler, more contemporary tone while red oak runs warmer.
Maple. Light, smooth, and clean looking. Great for modern homes and minimalist interiors. Harder than oak, so it holds up well in high-traffic spaces.
Hickory. One of the hardest domestic woods. Tons of character with dramatic grain variation. A popular choice for families with kids and pets.
Walnut. Rich, dark, and elegant. Softer than oak but stunning in formal living rooms, studies, and primary bedrooms.
Brazilian cherry (Jatoba) and exotic species. Deep reddish tones that darken over time. Extremely durable. Great for statement rooms.
Engineered European oak and wide-plank options. Popular in newer builds and remodels where a modern, wide-plank look is the goal. We carry Monarch Plank, Reward Flooring, and other designer lines.
We partner with the most respected hardwood manufacturers in the country so you can shop confidently:
If there's a specific brand or collection you've been eyeing, chances are we can order it or recommend a comparable option from our showroom.
Hardwood installs are a bigger commitment than carpet or vinyl, but we make the process straightforward:
We come to your home, measure each room, inspect your subfloor, and check for issues like moisture or unevenness.
Borrow samples to compare wood tones in your own lighting before committing.
We'll walk you through species, plank width, finish, grain pattern, and install method (nail-down, glue-down, or floating).
Hardwood needs to acclimate to your home's humidity before install. We handle this step so your floors don't cup or gap later.
Our dedicated in-house crew handles removal, subfloor prep, install, and cleanup. Most single-room jobs finish in two to three days.
We also install hardwood in offices, boutique retail spaces, rental properties and multi-unit buildings across the Bay Area.

In our experience, hardwood installation in Los Altos runs $8 to $15 per square foot for materials and labor. Premium species like walnut or designer wide-plank can push higher. Final cost depends on square footage, subfloor prep, stairs, and install method. We'll give you a clear, upfront quote after a free in-home measurement.
We carry Armstrong Flooring, Shaw Floors, Mohawk, COREtec, Pergo, Karastan, Bruce Flooring, Monarch Plank, Reward Flooring and more. Whether you want classic oak, wide-plank European styles, or exotic species, we'll help you find the right fit for your Los Altos home.
You can expect most hardwood installation projects to be finished within two to three days, though timing varies based on square footage and complexity. Bigger spaces or rooms requiring extensive subfloor work might need additional time. We prioritize quality craftsmanship while respecting your schedule.
Yes. Many Los Altos homes have beautiful original hardwood hiding under old finish or light damage. Refinishing can bring them back to life for a fraction of the cost of replacement. Ask us about sanding, staining, and sealing services.
Engineered hardwood is a smart choice for kitchens because it handles temperature and humidity better than solid wood.
For bathrooms, we usually recommend tile or luxury vinyl instead, since moisture is a bigger factor.
